* . . Lighting And Its Effects . . *

Still Image From Halloween:

The Lighting Used For This Still Image Shows Both High And Low Key Lighting. Low Key Lighting Is Used Mainly On The Left Side Of The Image. Therefore, The Shade Represents Death. High Key Lighting Is Used For The Effect To Appear More Realistically. Moreover, Under Lighting Has Been Used In Order To Attract The Audience More As The Lighting Used Lets The Viewers See The Characters Facial Expressions. In This Case, There Is A Man Wearing A Mask Standing Beside A Woman Who Appears To Be Dead. Therefore, This Would Attract The Audience More As They Would Like To View The Expressions Considering What May Have Happened.

This Is A Typical Convention To Use In A Horror Movie For The Audience To Then Pick Up On The Genre Straight Away. This Has An Effect On The Audience As The Darkness Of The Image Connotes Danger, Which Then Sets The Mood Of The Film. As Most Of The Still Image Is In Low Key Lighting, The Audience Are Able To Arrange Them To Be Prepared For The Following Scenes.

The Bride Of Chucky:

The Lighting Used For This Extract Is Mostly Low Key Lighting. They Have Used Low Key Lighting In Order To Show The Dramatic Shadows Of The Characters, In This Case The Woman. Therefore, This Would Grab The Attention Of The Viewers More As The Film Would Look More Practical. Moreover, Under Lighting Is Also Used To Then Notify The Audience, That The Movie Is A Thriller. Top Lighting Is Also Used To Show The Features Of The Characters. As A Result, The Audience Are Able To View The Facial Expressions More Clearly.

The Effect Appears More Realistically, To Give The Audience The Impression That Something Bad Is Going To Happen. Therefore, It Creates An Enigma For Them To Carry On Watching The Movie. As There Is A Contrast Between Dark And Light In Some Bits Of The Extract, It Shows The Audience That The Dramatic Scene Will Be Unexpected. Therefore, It Creates More Of A Suspicion For The Viewers To Keep Watching. As There Is A Lot Of Dark Lighting, This Would Connote Evilness In Order For The Viewers To Be Prepared For The Next Couple Of Scenes.

x. Peer Assessment Of Trailer Analyses .x

Simran -
http://www.sim92x.blogspot.com/

"There are several features that make “Face of Fear” an interesting trailer. Many parts of this trailer can appeal to a wide range of audience, firstly you can see that the people who will be attracted to watching this movie will be people who enjoy watching horrors/thrillers not only that but I personally think that a more variety of people will also watch this movie as the trailer is eye catching to watch. This movie is about a group of friends who turn by turn are getting attacked by the villain in the trailer; it shows in graphic detail of everything that is happening within it this will include the camera movement, sound, editing, costume, lighting, and make-up with these key factors this is what makes Face of Fear a trailer to remember."

There Are Several Features Which Make The Face Of Fear Trailer Appealing To The Audience. Whilst Watching The Trailer, You Are Able To See Who The Movie Is Aimed At As It Is Targeted More Towards The People Who Enjoy Thriller. Therefore, The Trailer Is Aimed At A Specific Niche Audience. However, It Is Still Presented To Everyone As The Cast Are Shown As Ordinary People, Lost In The Middle Of Nowhere On A Standard Day. Moreover, I Also Believe The Trailer Is Interesting To Watch As It Is Very Eye Catchy. “Face Of Fear” Is About A Group Of Friends, Who Are Being Followed By The Villain In The Trailer, Who Is Later Revealed As The Slaughterer. The Audience Are Able To View Realistically Everything That Is Or Will Happen. This Includes The Camera Movement, Sound, Editing, Costume, Lighting, And Make Up. With These Key Factors, Face Of Fear Is A Trailer To Remember. Therefore, It Grabs The Audience Attention Instantly.

"The camera work varifies in diffrent types of shots. There are many close ups, take for example, you see a girls eyes, as she crys on the screen- this gives the audience the feeling that something bad has happened, and makes them want to know what it is. Also the use of close up is used to focus on the pysco's facial expression- which is angry, this is also makes us wonder why he is angry. The shots that we see are quite short, about a second long at maximum- this is to create a narative enigma. Also it is so that the trailer doesn't drag on for to long, so it only focuses on the important parts."

The Camera Work Verifies In Different Types Of Shots. This Is Shown Throughout The Trailer As There Are Many Close Up Shots Used. For Example, When One Of The Actor’s Eyes Are Zoomed Upon, For The Audience To Sense That Something Bad Has Happened. Therefore, This Makes Them Want To Know What Would Happen, Resulting In Watching The Film. The Use Of Close Up’s Is Also Focused On The Psycho’s Facial Expressions. This Shows The Audience How The Actor Playing The Slaughterer Is Shown To Be Annoyed. This Again Attracts The Audience For Them To Go And Watch The Film. Moreover, The Make Up Used, Also Makes Clear That The Psycho Is The Main Villain In The Film. Each Shot Used Lasts For Around A Second Each. Consequently, This Creates A Narrative Enigma For The Audience, Keeping Them In Suspense Throughout The Whole Preview. Also, The Trailer Shows The Main Plot Of The Story, Instead Of Including Irrelevant Details, As The Students Didn’t Want The Trailer To Seem As If It’s Dragging Along.

“The costumes which the actors wear in the trailer are normal clothes which teenagers living in west London wear, showing how anyone can be affected by bullying, as the girl in the trailer is a normal teenager, but she is picked on and made to feel different. The actors themselves are young aged teenagers in 6th form to relate to the plot of the trailer. The setting of the trailer is in Greenford 6th form to show everyone that even people who are about to become young adults can be affected by bullying, and that this stuff happens when there are hundreds of other people around but nobody notices.”

The Costumes Which The Actors Wear In The Trailer Are Casual Clothing Which Regular People Tend To Wear On A Day To Day Basis; Therefore This Attracts The Audience As They Are Able To See What People Have To Cope With In Life, Reflecting On Real Life Issues. The Trailer Shows How Anyone Can Be Affected By Harassment, As The Main Character In The Clip Is The Victim Of Bullying. The Setting Of The Trailer Is In Greenford 6th Form, To Show How You Can Get Affected By Bullying Throughout Any Age In Life. Therefore, This Attracts The Audience To Watch The Film, As Its Reflecting Upon A Serious Matter.

Face Of Fear Analysis - Essay .x

The “Face Of Fear” Trailer Lasts For Around 2 Minutes, 34 Seconds. Face Of Fear Is About A Group Of Friends Lost In The Middle Of Nowhere. A Psychopath Is Then Shown To Be After Them As He Wishes To Slaughter Each Person There. This Trailer Appeals To People Who Are Into The Theme Of Horror. This Is Because, The Trailer Shows Clips Of The Psychopath Wanting To Slay The Friends, Therefore, Following Wherever They Go. As A Result, This Creates An Enigma For The Audience As It Shows A Lot Of Suspense, Leaving The Audience To Question What Is Going To Happen Next.

The Viewers Are Told The Name Of The Film At The End Of The Trailer. This Is Because, The Audience Are Able To Take In A Brief Summary About What The Film Would Be About, Before Knowing What It Is Called. The Film Name Is Placed At The End Of The Trailer To Leave The Audience In Suspense As To What The Film Will Be About. The Title “Face Of Fear” Would Sum Up The Film, As It Can Be Interpreted In A Number Of Ways. Firstly, Face Of Fear Can Bring Out A Message To The Audience, As How You Should Always Face The Things That Are Bothering You, Or Are In The Way. Also, It Can Mean How Fear Is Always Something That You Will Come Across In Life, One Day Or Another. Therefore, You Are Going To Have To Face It Sooner Or Later.

Moreover, The Type Of Action The Audience Can See In The Trailer Is Shots Such As Throwing A Boy Across The Fence, Placing A Girl Into A Wheel Barrow With Her Being Unconscious And Pouring Petrol Over One Of The Actors. Therefore, This Suggests That The Trailer Is Suitable For People From The Ages 15 And Onwards. The Audience Can Directly Pick Up On The Theme Of The Trailer Once It Comes To The End. The Trailer Starts Of With A Slow Song And Gradually Picks Up On The Beat Which Attracts The Audience More. When The Song Is Playing In A Slow Mode, The Scenes Are Shown To Be Longer. However, When The Beat Changes, The Shots Each Last For Around 2 Seconds, To Go Along With The Hit Of The Song. This Attracts The Audience More And Again, Leaves Them Questioning As To What Will Happen Next. As A Result, The Music Gives The Viewers The Sense That They Are Advertising A Trailer For People Who Are Into The Theme Of Horror As The Sound Chosen, Goes Directly With The Genre. The Trailer Uses Diegetic Sound As The Audience Are Able To Hear Some Of The Dialogue, As Well As The Soundtrack Being Played In The Background.

The Directors Of “Face Of Fear” Have Used A Variety Of Different Camera Effects Such As The Hidden Camera Effect And The Point Of View Shot. They Have Also Used Close Ups, So The Audience Can Catch A Glimpse Of Their Facial Expressions, And To Show The Viewers When There Is A “Private Number” Ringing One Of The Actors Mobiles. This Creates More Of A Dramatic Effect For The Audience As They Are Struck In Suspense As To What May Happen Next. They Have Also Used Long Shots So The Audience Are Able To View The Setting Of The Scene As Well As Examine The Actors Clothing, Which May Help Them Sense Who The Trailer May Appeal To. Furthermore, They Have Also Used Extreme Close Up Shots, So They Can Focus On Just One Specific Feature, Such As The Actors Eyes When Crying.

The Mise En Scene Is What Is Being Shown On The Screen As A Whole. The Actors In Face Of Fear Wear Normal Clothing That People Wear On A Day To Day Basis. Therefore, This Appeals To The Audience, As It Shows That They're Regular People Lost In The Middle Of Nowhere, Trying To Find There Way Back. The Lighting Is Also Shown To Be Very Dim. This Is Because; They Are Reflecting Upon A Serious Note, Trying To Grab The Audience Attention More. The Whole Trailer Is Shown To Be In The Dark. The Actor Playing The Psychopath Plays His Role Well As He Is Able To Pull The Audience Attention To Be Focused On Just Him. He Expresses His Role Well, Making The Viewers Believe That He Is A Real Psychopath.

Lastly, It Is More Effective In Making The Viewers Want To Watch The Film Through The Advertisement Of A Trailer Rather Than A Poster, As In The Trailer; You Are Able To See More Information Being Given. The Trailer Allows You To Introduce The Whole Cast As Well As Deliver A Short Summary About The Movie. However, With A Poster, You Are Not Able To See Much Information. Therefore, The Viewers Will Not Be Able To Know What The Film Is Going To Be About Etc. As A Result, The Audience Will Not Get Attracted Into Watching The Movie. I Would Be Expected To See This Trailer After The Films Rated 15 In The Cinemas. This Is Because, This Trailer Has Scenes Where The Psychopath Can Appear On Screen So Sudden, Therefore, This Will Not Be Suitable For The Younger Audience. Also, I Would Be Expected To See This Trailer After The Watershed (9.00pm) As The Younger Children May Be Watching TV And Would Be Able To Catch A Glimpse Of The Trailer Before Then.

The Sound Effect:
The Soundtrack Played In The Trailer Starts Of With A Slow Tune And Gradually Changes To A Fast Beat. This Creates A Dramatic Affect To The Trailer, As It Excites The Audience For Them To Be Able To See That There Is More To The Film. This Therefore Attracts The Audience As They Are Able To Engage In The Trailer As Well As Make Certain They Watch It Until The End.

The Length Of The Trailer:
The Length Of The Trailer Is Quite Short, As The Whole Trailer Lasts For 2 Minutes. This Therefore Gives The Audience A Chance To See A Brief Overview Of The Film, Making Certain There Not Getting Hold Of The Whole Story. This Also Shows, How Quick The Creators Have Used There Shots To Be Able To Create A Linear Medley Of Shots Which Are Unfolding A Story As They Go Along. Therefore, The Audience Are Then Able To Realize What The Film Will Be About.

Camera Shots:
There Are A Variety Of Shots Used In The Trailer “Saving Faith” Such As Long Shots So The Audience Are Able To View The Whole Mise En Scene. Also, Close Ups So The Viewers Can See The Facial Expressions Which Will Show The Characters Appearance In More Depth. Therefore, This Gives The Audience A Sense Of What The Characters Roles Will Be And How This Will Turn Into A Story. Moreover, The Students Have Also Used Shots Which Involves Being Recorded With A Character On Transport While The Camera Is Recording Through The Window. This Also Creates An Effect As It Shows The Different Shots Used, Therefore, Giving A Sense That The Film Is Set In A Variety Of Different Areas.

The Lighting Being Used:
The Lighting Of The Shots Changes Throughout The Trailer, As Some Of The Shots Are Filmed In Daylight Whereas, The Other Shots Are Filmed In The Dark. This Therefore Gives The Audience A Brief Idea On What The Trailer Is Going To Be About As Most Of The Shots Are Filmed In The Dark Which Shows That The Trailer Will Be A Thriller. The Lighting Is Shown To Be Fairly Dim When The Characters Are Holding Guns, Showing Violence. This Then Reflects The Idea On What The Film Is Going To Be About.

The Mise En Scene/ Setting:
The Trailer Is Set In A Variety Of Different Places. “Saving Faith” Has Scenes Filmed In The Graveyard, In A City, Near Local Houses, Near A Police Station Etc. Therefore, This Shows Us As The Audience What Sort Of Footage Would Take Place In The Actual Film. Therefore, This Gives The Audience A Brief Idea On What To Expect When They Go To Watch The Movie.

The Characters In Saving Faith Wear Clothes Such As Hoodies. Therefore, This Shows The Audience That the Trailer Is Aimed at the Younger Generation, The Youths In Today’s Society.
